NaNoWriMo 2012

I do it every year, and I have yet to win.

That's right, it's time for NaNoWriMo again! It's also time for Movember, which I think is a silly thing but a great cause. Too bad I can't grow a mustache. Perhaps I'll make some chocolate ones or something.

But this post is about Nano. Yes I'm trying it again this year. I at least think I'll do better than last year (where I believe I got about 2000 words in and gave up), and I'm even cautiously optimistic about being able to get to 50k words!

I know a lot of my problems in the past have been due to a complete and utter lack of planning. I was trying to write by the seat of my pants (which is the recommended way of doing Nano, from the creator), or I just had a vague idea or a couple of characters. That doesn't work for me. It's too easy for me to get distracted or lose interest in the story.

This year I'm going to plan all the little nitpicky bits. I'm planning on trying to follow a standard "layout" for whatever I choose to write - the Hero's Journey, for example. I'm going to have a good roadmap (storymap?) for where I'm going - beginning, middle, end. I think if I do that, I have a decent shot at doing this thing.

Not saying the product will be any good, just that it will actually exist this year.

On the other hand, I don't really have a plan yet. I have no clue what I want to write, I've been trying to think of the best story for this year. Something that I'm excited about, that I really want to tell.

Maybe it'll come to me in my sleep.
